Sabine Esche porcelain dolls
german gallery book curriculum vitae guest book

After a long time away from the market, it gives me great pleasure to be able once again to offer my dolls to collectors in Europe, the USA and Canada.
Many people in those areas may be familiar with my earlier limited series, but only a small group of customers is acquainted with my porcelain originals, some of which served as models for the series. Because I have often been asked where the originals can be seen, I've put together a selection of photographs of my dolls. Some of these originals have already found their admirers and have scattered to the four corners of the Earth.
It all began when I happened upon an old family photo album. When I looked at the picture of my grandparents' four little children, I was overwhelmed by the desire to free them from the photograph. That was the impulse to create portraits of children with waxy modeling clay. It wasn't long before I decided to work with higher quality porcelain.
Working with great patience and care, I found that this material was best at creating a soft lustre and at capturing the grace and charm of children. Later I was inspired by sketched portraits.
The first thing I do is to create a workshop model upon which I base the individual dolls. I limit the fabric to about one meter so that the clothing, which I design and sew myself, retains its unique character.
Hand-blown glass eyes give the dolls' faces great expressiveness and vitality. I had the good fortune to find an artist, a specialist in this area, who expertly rendered my ideas into dolls with eyes of honey gold or startling blue.
In one of the later models, Lila, the little lady in a red dress and white cap, you can see in the facial expressions that my work began to develop in a new direction. . .
I'm happy to welcome all the admirers of my dolls to my new Web site and hope that you find lasting pleasure with the dolls.
I'd also like to say thank you for all the kind words of encouragement you've sent me. With your support, I am all the more determined to bravely carry on – perhaps with a touch of romance – creating dolls for you.
